The ex-professional footballer, Gary Neville net worth is $25 million.

He is known as being one of the most decorated english footballers ever. Since retiring from playing, he has become a coach, commentator, and pundit.

He is also the co-owner of Salford City Football Club and has a number of business interests in property firms around Manchester.

Neville's Early Life

Gary Alexander Neville was born on 18th February 1975 to Jill Neville (née Harper) and Neville Neville.

Both of Gary’s parents were sporty; his mother was a netball player, and his father was a league cricketer and later went on to be a director of Bury FC.

Gary is the eldest of three siblings. His brother Phil and sister Tracey are twins who were born 23 months after their brother.

Growing up together, the siblings would always play ball games as sport dominated the family's life.

Sport still dominates the family's life today as both Phil and Tracey went on to play professional sports with Phil playing football for Manchester United and England whilst Tracey played netball at an international level.

The two boys shared a bedroom in their terraced house home, even during their teenage years when their careers in professional sport started to take off.

The Nevilles attended Elton High School in Bury, Greater Manchester. It was here that their talent for a number of sports developed as the two both excelled in P.E.

Gary himself began his sporting life as a cricketer and played for his local cricket club Greenmount. He was a talented player and played alongside Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, at Bunbury Cricket Festival.

Both he and his brother Phil both played for Lancashire’s Under-14 cricket team.

Neville also played in the Bolton Cricket League for Greenmount Cricket Club.

Joining Manchester United

Although he was a talented cricketer, growing up in Manchester during the 1980s meant that Gary developed a huge passion for football and his club Manchester United.

When he was 11-years-old, Neville joined the now famous Manchester United Youth Academy.

Neville rose through the ranks and became one of the most promising full backs in the country alongside his brother.

It was here that he signed his first contract at the age of 16 when he joined the youth squad as an apprentice.

The 'Class of '92' is the 2013 documentary that refers to this exceptional group of youngsters that emerged in United's academy setup during the early 90s, most of whom went on to have exceptional careers.

Some notable colleagues included David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, all of whom went on to represent the first team for many years and win numerous trophies.

First Professional Match

Neville played his first professional game on 16th September 1992 for Manchester United.

The match was a UEFA Cup first round first leg at Old Trafford against Torpedo Moskva.

His appearance was as a substitute for Lee A. Martin in the second half.

Making The National Team

Although he made his first appearance for Manchester United in 1992 it wouldn't be until the 1994/95 season where Neville made his mark on the footballing world.

Due to the injury of first choice right back Paul Parker, Gary was finally given a chance to make a name for himself.

And he took it.

He made 27 appearances that season and although it ended in heartbreak with the defender experiencing defeat in the F.A Cup Final to Everton and losing the title on the last day to Blackburn Rovers, the young right-back had shown enough throughout to earn a call up to the national side.

The national team were in turmoil after missing out on World Cup qualification in 1994 and the country were looking to the new group of youngsters that were emerging on to the international scene.

New England manager Terry Venables gave the Manchester United academy graduate the first of what would eventually be 85 caps in an England shirt.

The match took place at Wembley Stadium, on 3rd June 1995. It was a friendly against Japan with England winning 2-1.

Just a year later Gary would become a household name in the UK for his performances at right back for the nation in Euro '96, where England were the hosts and football fever had gripped the nation.

Within two short years of being a substitute for Manchester United the 21-year-old was now receiving national attention and praise.

Manchester United Career

Neville is best known for being a one-club man as he spent his whole career playing for Manchester United.

Born and raised in Manchester he was a fan favourite who represented Mancunian values on the pitch.

Heart, determination and courage were in abundance every time he stepped on to the football field as he struck up good on-field relationships with the club's right sided wingers, most notably David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite being a defender and not known for his goal scoring ability, Neville even managed to score a handful goals for the team.

His first was in 1997 in a 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough. He also scored in two UEFA Champions League matches; once against Lyon, and the other against FC Basel.

Gary had a glittering career at his boyhood club winning the Premier League title an astounding 8 times, the FA Cup 3 times and the UEFA Champions League 2 times.

He was a consistent performer throughout United's tremendous success under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson and he became a Manchester United legend for it.

Always one to wear his heart on his sleeve in 2006 he was fined $5000 in 2006 for goading Liverpool fans.

This happened just as Manchester United scored a goal in the 90th minute to win the match.

Despite his fine the fans loved his celebration in what has later become an iconic moment for the club against their biggest rivals.

When he retired in 2011 at the age of 36, he became the second longest-serving player of the team behind Ryan Giggs having amassed 602 appearances for the club (and 7 goals).

Gary’s International Career

After his debut against Japan and similar to his club career, Neville was the right-back for the national side for more than a decade.

In 1996, Gary was joined in the national team by his brother Phil. The two became the first set of brothers to play side-by-side in both the national team and an FA Cup-winning team for over a century.

However unlike his club career, Gary's time at England was marred with disappointment after disappointment.

During his time at England the team would always underperform at major tournaments.

Perhaps the most disappointing time was in Portugal for the Euro 2004 tournament. There were high expectations for the players who had been dubbed the 'golden generation'.

With players like Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard, Cole, Owen, Neville and the emergence of wonder-kid Wayne Rooney many felt that they could go on to finally fulfil their potential and win the tournament.

It wasn't to be as England, like so many times before, lost on penalties.

Throughout his career with the England team, Gary Neville was selected by five different coaches. He briefly captained the team after David Beckham was forced to sit on the bench due to an injury after half-time.

Going Into Management

In 2016, Valencia CF owner Peter Lim, a close friend of Gary's, gave him the position of manager at the club with his brother also to be on his coaching staff.

It was a move that shocked the footballing world that a huge club like Valencia would appoint a manager with no prior experience of leading a side.

Despite the obvious risks, Neville admirably took the opportunity with both hands, moving his wife and kids over to the country at the same time.

The move turned out to be a disaster as he was sacked from his first managing role for Valencia in 2016.

He had only been in the post for four months, but the club was down in 14th place in the league.

The team only managed to win three of their 16 games under Neville.

Achievements

  • Gary Neville played in 85 England matches, which means he is the most capped right back player for the national side.
  • Neville was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2015, housed at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
  • In 2009, Gary Neville was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Bolton for his contributions to football.

Retirement, Coaching, Punditry and Entrepreneurship

Neville decided to retire from professional football on 2nd February 2011. His final appearance was on New Year’s Day 2011 against West Bromwich Albion. This was a 2-1 victory that took place at The Hawthorns.

Coaching

He was appointed by Roy Hodgson as a coach for the England national team in 2012, with a four-year contract.

He continued as assistant manager of the national squad for the World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Euro qualifiers.

Salford FC

In 2014, Gary, alongside his former teammates Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, and Nicky Butt, agreed to buy a 50% share of Salford City football club as a business venture with current Valencia chairman Peter Lim.

David Beckham purchased 10% of the club off Lim in 2019.

The club have garnered a huge media following, given their owners high profile in the game and are currently in the professional ranks in England's League Two of the football pyramid.

Punditry

Neville joined Sky Sports in 2011 as a Monday Night Football match analyst alongside Jamie Redknapp. He has also been a pundit for ITV during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

As a pundit, Neville has been a revelation. Praised for his neutral analysis and excellent tactical insights he has changed the way many talk about the game.

Whether he is talking about individual teams or about the football league structure in general he is never short of opinion as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp can testify.

"I didn't learn a lot during lockdown except Gary Neville has an opinion on absolutely everything!" Klopp told BBC Sport.

Neville's punditry is a lot like his playing style, where his no-nonsense and straight talking have resonated with fans and other pundits alike.

His on screen partnership with former rival Jamie Carragher of Liverpool has delivered some of the most entertaining and insightful moments in the world of football analysis and made them both into household names.

YouTube Channel

In 2021, Gary started a YouTube channel called The Overlap with Skybet. His videos contain interviews of sporting figures, including Anthony Joshua, Roy Keane, Tyson Fury and Jamie Carragher.

The Channel started in April 2021 and already has over 300,000 subscribers.

Other Business Interests

Aside from football, Neville has invested heavily in property.

According to some reports, between his retirement in 2011 and today has been involved in over 66 firms including restaurants, film production, estate agency and eco schemes.

The majority of his assets are tied up in hotels and property development companies which themselves have £30million in assets.

He co-owns the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester with Ryan Giggs.

Books

In 2012, Gary Neville released his autobiography Red: My Autobiography.

Neville’s Family Life

In 1996, Gary began dating Hannah Thornley who he met through friends at a party at the Ritz nightclub. The couple were together for about six years, and some reports believe they were also engaged.

However, the relationship was not set to last as Hannah left Gary for her former school friend, Lee Howard.

Two years after breaking up with Hannah, Gary started dating Emma Hadfield. At the time of being introduced, Emma was a holistic therapy student.

Gary proposed to Emma in Malta, and they were married on 16th June 2007 at Manchester Cathedral.

Gary and Emma’s wedding was attended by some of his teammates, including Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Wayne Rooney.

Gary’s younger brother, Phil, was the best man.

Gary and Emma have two daughters. Molly was born in 2009, and Sophie in 2010.

In 1999, Gary Neville was the best man for his teammate David Beckham as he married his wife, Victoria Adams.

Gary Neville Quotes

“I wouldn’t swap Paul Scholes for anybody. He is quite simply the most complete footballer I have ever played with.”

“Nothing improves your confidence and brings a team together more than winning a cup.”

“As football gets more globalized, it’s probably more important than ever to have one or two players in your team who have grown up in the same streets or been to the same schools as the hard-core fans.”

“One year’s poor form remains a blip but if it happens next year, you can say it’s a trend.”

“There have been times when I’ve reflected on my international career and just thought: ‘Well that was a massive waste of time.”’

“I developed a mechanism so that whatever mistakes I made, I would bounce straight back. Whatever was happening off the pitch, I could put it to one side and maintain my form. Call it mental resilience or a strong mind, but that is what we mean when we talk about experience in a football team.
